Writing Challenge: A Few of Our Favorite Things

Do you have a favorite holiday decoration? This is mine.

silver bells

This was my Mamaw’s musical globe. The angels move in a circle as Silver Bells plays.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air
There’s a feeling
of Christmas
Children laughing
People passing
Meeting smile after smile
and on every street corner you’ll hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day

Strings of street lights
Even stop lights
Blink a bright red and green
As the shoppers rush
home with their treasures

Hear the snow crunch
See the kids bunch
This is Santa’s big scene
And above all this bustle
You’ll hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It’s Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them sing
Soon it will be Christmas day

Growing up in the country, the idea of Christmas time in the city fascinated me. The hustle and bustle on the sidewalks as people dressed in their finest festive attire carry perfectly wrapped presents from high end department stores. The glowing mix of Christmas lights with marquee signs. Yellow taxis spraying melted snow as they pull to the curb. It all sounded so sophisticated! That world was completely foreign to me, which made the appeal all the more enticing.

This musical globe is a cherished part of my Christmas season. I  pause each time I see it, no matter how busy I am, and smile. I remember my Mamaw gently winding it for me and teaching me the words to Silver Bells. Now it is my young daughter who asks for it to be wound so that she can listen to the song and watch the angels dance. And together we tenderly sing, “It’s Christmas time in the city.”
